How odd to celebrate Christmas almost an entire day before all of our friends and family!
Tyler cooked up an amazing breakfast for us before leaving Franz Josef... Those community kitchens really are awesome!! Plenty of counter space, 10-12 stove tops, fridge/freezer space, several sinks and people from all over the world making meals.
We headed to Hokitika first, a cute little beach town with black sand and tons of driftwood! The town was pretty small but had it not been Christmas, we could have spent an hour or two wandering the shops. We took a stroll down the beach and then went to check out the Hokitika Gorge.
It was only a 30 minute return trip over the swing bridge to the Gorge and the sand flies did their best to chase us back to the car. We are going to wander up the coast to Greymouth for the afternoon and see if we can take a tour of the Monteith Brewery and then head across the island to stay in Hamner Springs! We aren't quite sure where the next 24 hours will take us but it will be fun to find out... We just have to make it to Kaikoura by noon on Sunday for our whale watching expedition! 🐋
P.S. Houston friends- don't be too jealous. There are traffic jams here, too!
Merry Christmas from your favorite world travelers!
XOXO
Elissa & Tyler
